What does hail damage look like?

What Are the Signs that My Roof Has Been Damaged by Hail?

Did your area just get hit with a hail storm? If so, you’re probably wondering if your roof has hail damage. But what does hail damage look like. Read our latest blog and view our infographic below to show you what hail could do to your home.

When thunderstorms whip through Indiana, delivering strong winds, rain and hail, it is normal to wonder if you have hail damage to your roof.  Here are some thoughts to help you make a determination.

Size of the Hail

Once hail becomes larger than an inch in diameter, it can very well cause damage to your roof.  Even ¾” hail when coupled with strong wind can cause damage by dislodging granules from shingles.  One inch hail starts to bruise the shingle underlayment.  As the hail gets larger than one inch, it causes damage simply by falling without any additional force from the wind.

As hail gets closer to 2” in diameter, it starts to cause more severe damage, including penetrating the softer parts of the roof such as roof vents and ridge caps.  Anything over 2” will definitely cause damage.

What Does Hail Damage Look Like?

Round black dots, loss of granules, bruised shingles, and tears or splits are all signs of damage.  However, you can’t always see the damage on the shingles.  Hail can cause the shingle to split, but that is only visible on the backside.   A roofing contractor can assist you with this type of inspection.

Who Should I Call If I Suspect Hail Damage?

When hail occurs, numerous contractors may come knocking at your door, offering to inspect your roof.  However, if you have experienced a hail storm and suspect that you might have hail damage, the best option is for you to contact a reputable roofing contractor.  Indiana Restoration & Cleaning Services has been in business for over 30 years, serving customers in the Noblesville, Fishers, Carmel and Indianapolis areas.  Indiana Restoration & Cleaning Services will work directly with your insurance company for repairs and replacements.  Work with a company you know you can trust.
